As vehicles adopt 48VIN architectures, USB Power Delivery (PD) systems benefit from improved thermal efficiency and simplified design. This presentation compares 12V buck-boost and 48V buck-only topologies, showcasing real-world thermal, printed circuit board (PCB) area, and component count improvements. Practical techniques such as optimal switching frequency selection, PCB stack enhancements, and firmware-based thermal foldback will be discussed to help engineers create compact, reliable, high-power USB-C® charging solutions.
