We propose an industry session highlighting the cutting-edge Type-5 ePWM features in Texas Instruments' ASM MCUs. This innovation enables a revolutionary single-chip solution for isolated single stage AC/DC converters based on 3-phase direct matrix converter topology. Unlike conventional approaches that require separate DSP and FPGA components to manage complex PWM patterns and multi-step switch commutation, our MCU with Type-5 ePWM capabilities integrates control and PWM generation into one cost-effective unit, eliminating the need for expensive FPGAs. To showcase the real-world application and effectiveness of this technology, we have engineered an 11kW matrix converter-based AC/DC reference design. During the session, we will present PWM generation using Type-5 ePWM and comprehensive test results demonstrating the converter's performance across a wide operational range, providing attendees with valuable insights into this advanced, simplified power conversion solution.
