This paper presents the design of a high-power-density Switched-Mode Power Supply (SMPS) using planar magnetics operating from a single-phase AC supply. The SMPS is designed to have an IP65 rating and operate with natural convection. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to optimize the planar magnetics and the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) windings. The designed prototype has a three times higher power density when compared to an off-the-shelf SMPS. Experimental results have been presented, highlighting the key performance metrics of the SMPS.
