D07.10 - Thermal Measurement of Asymmetric Losses in a Submodule of an Isolated Modular Multilevel DC-DC Converter

This work presents a thermal measurement method for evaluating losses in a single submodule of an Isolated Modular Multilevel DC-DC Converter (IM2DC). A steady-state calorimetric approach using thermal imaging is implemented on a half-bridge submodule while the full converter operates at different voltage levels. The measured losses show a consistent asymmetry: low-side devices dissipate up to twice the losses of the high-side devices. This imbalance highlights unequal utilization of the semiconductor components, with potential implications for reliability and thermal design. The method is validated against analytical loss calculations, with absolute errors below 0.07 W. The proposed method enables accurate, non-intrusive, on-converter loss measurement and supports submodule-level optimization in modular DC-DC converter architectures.
