T11.3 - Design Optimization of a Bidirectional Single-Inductor Multiple-Output (SIMO) DC-AC Converter

This paper presents a detailed discussion on design optimization of an efficient, extensible, and high-performance bidirectional single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) DC-AC converter for peer-to-peer wireless power transfer (P2P-WPT) applications. This design optimization is based on the operating principle, gain relationship, and loss model of the bidirectional SIMO converter. For the sake of representativeness and ease of explanation, two hardware prototypes of a bidirectional single-inductor three-output (SITO) topology are compared with different parameter designs to evaluate the performance difference. The experimental results confirm the improved efficiency and output waveforms with optimized device parameters. It is worth noting that, except for the general considerations for component selection, this approach optimizes the design with the aid of the power loss model, which provides a design reference for the bidirectional SIMO DC-AC converter in peer-to-peer power-sharing (one-to-one/one-to-many) applications. Experimental results show an efficiency improvement from 78.27% to 84.18% for DC-AC power inversion, and from 64.20% to 87.47% for AC-DC power conversion.
