T05.4 - Operation of Regenerative Cascaded Multicell Converter-Based Drive Under Fault Condition with Improved Input Current Distortion

Operations of conventional non-regenerative cascaded multicell converter (CMC) based drives under fault conditions have been extensively studied with the objective of maximizing balanced output voltages. However, this often leads to uneven power sharing among cells, causing partial harmonic cancellation, distorted grid currents and uneven heating losses. This paper investigates the operation of a regenerative CMC under fault conditions to reduce the input current distortions by adding an additional common mode voltage (CMV) at the output side. A simplified approach is proposed to derive the CMV, ensuring both balanced line voltages and uniform power sharing among active cells. A prototype is developed in laboratory to validate the proposed strategy.
