This presentation presents a single-phase single stage AC- DC matrix converter adapting bidirectional GaNs for onboard charger (OBC) applications. LLC based, dual active bridge (DAB) based, and series resonant (SR)-DAB based matrix converters are compared. A control algorithm is discussed to achieve unity power factor, to minimize conduction losses and to extend zero voltage switching (ZVS) range of power switches of the primary side and the secondary side. The simulation results of the control algorithm are provided. The parallel operation of bidirectional GaNs is explored. The hardware of AC-DC matrix converter is prototyped to verify the control algorithm. The experimental results are provided.
