In this paper the influence of Supercap Energy Storage Systems (SCESS) on the frequency response of power systems is investigated. Therefor a single machine model with a gas turbine for primary control is enhanced by a SCESS. To take the behaviour of a SCESS into account the investigation is done by a 1 MW Power Hardware in the Loop (PHiL) System with a Realtime Simulator and a real 400 kW SCESS. The SCESS is operated with a Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) algorithm to provide virtual inertia by injecting active power and therefore stabilize the grid frequency. The results show that the SCESS can improve the RoCoF and the Nadir of the grid frequency.
