This paper proposes a novel isolated soft-switching DC-DC topology for electric vehicle (EV) charging applications with wide output voltage requirements. The proposed topology stacks a Dual Active Bridge (DAB) and a Phase-Shift Full Bridge (PSFB) converter on the secondary side through an intermediate buck half-bridge to facilitate a wide output voltage. With just about trapezoidal transformer current, which results in minimum RMS current, the DAB stage handles fine voltage regulation, while the PSFB stage extends the output voltage. To further suppress the circulating current and related reactive power, a secondary-side modulation scheme is implemented in the PSFB stage. This innovation minimizes the circulating RMS current and enables soft-switching through either ZVS or ZCS on all switching devices, thereby improving efficiency. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the converter, demonstrating soft-switching capability across all switching devices. To validate the operating principle and performance of the proposed topology, simulation and experimental results are provided with respect to a 650V input, 285V to 835V output, 5kW SiC hardware prototype.
