As mobile devices move toward thinner form factors and increased power demands, the physical volume of the output inductor remains a primary bottleneck in DC-DC converter integration. This presentation explores the operation of the multi-level buck converter as a high-density alternative to conventional two-level designs for battery charging. We examine the fundamental switching states and the resulting reduction in inductor volt-seconds, which allows for significantly smaller passive components. We demonstrate how this topology enables ultra-low-profile inductors, meeting the sub-1mm height requirements of next-generation mobile applications.
