Zhuzhou CRRC Times Electric UK Innovation Center
Prasanth Thummala, PhD, is an Associate Principal Hardware Design Engineer at the Zhuzhou CRRC Times Electric UK Innovation Centre, Solihull, United Kingdom. He received his PhD in Power Electronics from the Technical University of Denmark and has over 15 years of experience across industrial R&D, postdoctoral research, and advanced power electronics product development.
Dr. Thummala works on power electronic converters and magnetics design for railway, automotive, aerospace, defence, industrial, and medical applications. His experience includes high-power and high-frequency DC–DC and DC–AC converters, planar and conventional magnetics, EMI/EMC filter design, wide-bandgap converter development, and wireless power transfer systems. He regularly uses multiphysics simulation tools such as ANSYS Maxwell, Simplorer, and HFSS to analyse electromagnetic, thermal, and loss behaviour in high-performance systems.
In his current role, he leads magnetics research and development for high-power conversion platforms, including railway traction inverters, EV onboard chargers, and underwater wireless charging systems. Before joining CRRC, he held senior technical roles at LITE-ON in Singapore, where he led R&D projects for automotive OEMs and developed multi-port, bidirectional onboard charger platforms up to 22 kW.
Prior to LITE-ON, he worked at Flux A/S in Denmark, where he designed and developed magnetic components for defence, space, military, aerospace, and industrial applications, with a strong focus on reliability and performance under demanding operating conditions.
Dr. Thummala is an IEEE Senior Member, an inventor on multiple international patents, and a regular contributor to IEEE journals and conferences, including APEC and ECCE. His research interests include high-efficiency power conversion, magnetics innovation, and scalable wireless power transfer technologies.
