A bidirectional bipolar boost converter was studied for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in medium voltage (MV) distribution grids. The converter accommodates the lower voltages produced by BESS and transforms them to a DC voltage level suitable for direct (transformerless) interconnection to an MV point of connection. The present work focuses on development of a dynamic model and control method for this DC-DC conversion system. The model and control approach are validated in a scaled-down 1kW prototype of the MV storage interface converter.
