Solid-state-transformer (SST)-based DC distribution for data center is under demonstration because of its simple system structure and good system efficiency. However, compared to the conventional AC distribution network, the DC distribution network faces more challenges on the short-circuit performance and protection. This digest discusses the modeling and analysis of the short-circuit fault in the DC distribution network in the data center application. Different cable models are compared. Also, the impact of short-circuit faults on the SST converter hardware design, DC distribution system operation, as well as the system protection are discussed. A DC short-circuit test platform is developed, and short-circuit tests under ±400V DC are conducted, which validated the simulation model.
